Is Sugar Toxic?

“… the answer to the question of whether sugar is as bad as Lustig claims is that it certainly could be. It very well may be true that sugar and high-fructose corn syrup, because of the unique way in which we metabolize fructose and at the levels we now consume it, cause fat to accumulate in our livers followed by insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, and so trigger the process that leads to heart disease, diabetes and obesity. They could indeed be toxic, but they take years to do their damage. It doesn’t happen overnight. Until long-term studies are done, we won’t know for sure.”

“Flawed Calculators” for Cholesterol as indicator for statin drug use?

Do we get it yet?  That all the calculations in the world likely equate to the need to live better and gain health through lifestyle changes and modifications which reduce excess weight and visceral fat, as well as improve lipid profiles, muscle mass, and inflammatory processes. There is no “calculator” which would predict a need for a “statin medication” without ALSO predicting the need to change the way people live for longevity and quality of life…

Last week, the nation’s leading heart organizations released a sweeping new set of guidelines for lowering cholesterol, along with an online calculator meant to help doctors assess risks and treatment options. But, in a major embarrassment to the health groups, the calculator appears to greatly overestimate risk, so much so that it could mistakenly suggest that millions more people are candidates for statin drugs.

Banning Artificial Trans Fats? Read the Label; Check Fat Content…

Will the US be next to ban artificial trans fats in packaged foods and restaurants? The FDA has made the proposal. Known to be a major contributor to heart disease, these fats have been substantially reduced in our diets. However, “The artery is still half clogged,”. Scientists emphasize though that saturated fats are still an enormous problem in the American diet, and that Thursday’s ruling should not give consumers false security “In the push to reduce trans fats, people have been forgetting that saturated fats are much worse because there is a lot more saturated fat in the diet than trans fat,” Read the article, then read the label! Better yet, reduce your consumption of packaged foods and be an educated consumer in enjoying dining out.

‘Metabolically Healthy’ vs. ‘Metabolically Unhealthy’ Obesity

In researching the relationship between fat and inflammation I came across a recent report on studies which indicate there are metabolically fit and unfit profiles of obesity.

Unlike fat tissue in ‘healthy obese’ people, which generates new cells to help store fat as it accumulates, the fat cells of the unhealthy obese swell to their breaking point, straining the cellular machinery and ultimately dying off.This is accompanied by inflammation, and it leads to ectopic fat accumulation — the shuttling of fat into organs where it does not belong, like the liver, heart and skeletal muscle. A fatty liver frequently coincides with metabolic abnormalities, and studies suggest that it may be one of the causes of insulin resistance, the fundamental defect in Type 2 diabetes.

The fat “shuttled” to accumulate around organs is called “visceral fat” and this can be easily measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). A metabolic screening for Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, Triglycerides, and Fasting Blood Sugar along with body composition analysis (BIA) and body measurements as well as blood pressure are part a simple means to identify obesity imposing health risks.
